Visual Culture and Contemporary Art is a two-year Master's Degree Program, which focuses on tutoring students to develop and contextualize their own artistic, curatorial or theoretical work. It is open to artists and practitioners with different backgrounds. The program explores new forms of artistic production and professional agency within the broader field of visual culture. Theory and practice are tightly interwoven, and emphasis is put on developing each student's artistic, curatorial and theoretical thinking.
The two majors of the program, Visual Culture and Contemporary Art (ViCCA) and Curating, Managing and Mediating Art (CuMMA) have specific learning outcomes. The ViCCA major works through three special fields of interest (Sites, Senses and Situations; Words and Spaces; Beings and Things). CuMMA major focuses on the professional skills needed for curating and mediating art. In both majors some of the courses are also available for the students of the other major.
The two majors, ViCCA and CuMMA have the same compulsory joint studies. The joint studies include introductions to issues in contemporary art and visual culture as well as an understanding of their historical background. The program stresses art in its various contexts, with no preference to any particular media. Art’s role and impact in the society is acknowledged. Art is also examined in dialogue with science and technology and other academic areas represented in Aalto. Joint studies provide the students with good professional and academic skills as well as the tools necessary for artists, curators and arts professionals to function productively in society.
Both majors offer a range of specific advanced studies. Their specific education contents are described in detail below. In addition to that, the Master's Degree Program includes elective studies, which can be selected from a wide range of courses offered by the other programs of Aalto and other universities.
