Professor Martti Raevaara

Learning outcomes

Master's level studies in art education deepen the student’s art pedagogy thinking, artistic skills and knowledge and understanding of visual culture phenomena and operating methods of modern art. The student learns to plan and carry out artistic activities with different groups of people while being aware of the conditions for a sustainable lifestyle. He/she understands the dynamics of artistic processes, can identify the connections between social and cultural factors and artistic activities, and is able to take the needs of special groups into consideration. The student learns to examine art education activities from different theoretical and philosophical aspects and utilise the opportunities provided by media environments in his/her art pedagogy work.

The aim of the degree is to train art education teachers who possess wide-ranging competence in the visual field, artistic education and diverse interaction skills and can work as instructors of different pupil groups, developers of pedagogical methods and learning environments, actively influence society and participate in international dialogue relating to their area of knowledge. Teaching is based on current research information and is characterised by the combination of multidisciplinary views on experience knowledge arising from artistic and pedagogical practices.

A master’s degree completed in Art Education provides broad-based teaching qualifications and qualification for teaching art in comprehensive and upper secondary schools as well as the skills to work in teaching, guidance and expert positions in other learning environments in the visual field. Provisions on teacher qualifications are laid down in the Decree on Teaching Qualifications (A986/1998, A865/2005) and provisions on the training leading to these qualifications in the Government Decree on University Degrees in (A794/2004).

Education content

The major in art education approaches visual culture, art and illustration from the pedagogical and research viewpoint. The master’s degree studies familiarise the student with artistic, photographic, audiovisual and multisensory forms of expression and teach him/her to plan, realise and assess art education activities taking place in schools and other operating environments with consideration to the conditions for a sustainable way of life. The studies deepen the student’s critical art pedagogy thinking and knowledge and understanding of visual culture phenomena and operating methods of modern art. The student learns to examine art education activities from different theoretical, philosophical and research aspects and utilise the opportunities provided by developing technologies in his/her art pedagogy work.

Studies leading to a Master's Degree in Art Education (120 credits) comprise advanced studies in the major (85 credits), which are made up of the master's thesis (30 credits) and teacher's pedagogical studies (35 credits). These periods are arranged in co-operation with the University of Tampere, University of Helsinki and the University of the Arts Helsinki.. Teacher’s pedagogical studies for Swedish-speaking students are arranged in co-operation with Åbo Akademi University. Teacher's pedagogical studies completed at another university can also be accredited as part of the degree. Major studies are arranged in co-operation with other Finnish and international universities, schools, art institutes and other social actors.

An applicant with at least a BA degree in art or pedagogy and teaching experience can also apply for the Master's Programme in Art Education.
