Costume Design

Basic information of the minor

Extent: 15-25 ECTS

Target group: ARTS students, University of the Arts, Aalto other students, and students from other universities.

Application procedure:

Application to the programme can be done either via Aalto University eAge system’s internal minor application process, or under JOO agreement from other Finnish Universities. Students of the University of the Ars apply through AaltoARTS mobility studies.

Students from other Finnish universities apply via JOOPAS https://haku.joopas.fi.

The applicant has to write a letter of motivation, a preliminary plan of his/her minor studies and 1-3 examples of artistic or research work. The work examples will be sent either in digital form with other application materials or by mail before the application deadline to study coordinator. Selection criteria: motivation and the level of artistic or research work examples.

Quotas and restrictions: The number of new minor students per year is max 6. In case there are more equal applicants, the students from Production Design and Costume Design have the priority to be accepted. Accepted minor student has to make a study plan with the teacher in charge of the minor in the beginning of the next semester and start the minor studies during the same academic year. The study right for the minor will be awarded to the two year period.

Content and structure of the minor

The student is able to identify the field of costume design, and to recognise the basic concepts and practices of costume design in different performance areas. He / She is able to interpret the meanings and functions of costume within live and screen performance. The student is able to read the performance through the characters.

If a student already has a background in a related design field, at completion of the minor he/she will be able to design and realize the costumes for a live performance or for screen (design focus).

The student is also able to analyse the costume design of a performance (theory focus).

For an international/foreign student the minor can be tailored from the courses available in English.
